Pet Urine Odor Removal for Area Rugs, Carpet, and Upholstery

You cleaned the spot. The smell came back a week later. That pattern tells you the urine went deeper than any spray can follow.
GM Carpet Care removes pet urine odor at the source. Area rugs come to our in-plant facility in Toms River for a full wash and rinse. Carpet and upholstery get treated right in your home. Our family has been helping pet owners with accidents since 1978.
Why Pet Urine Odor Keeps Coming Back
Urine moves fast. It passes through the fibers and reaches the backing within seconds. On wall-to-wall carpet, it keeps going into the pad below.
As it dries, urine leaves salts and bacteria behind. Those residues pull moisture from the air. So on a humid summer day, the smell wakes right back up.
Most home products only treat the top of the fibers. The source sits lower, and the odor returns. Our post on why home cleaning methods cannot remove pet urine from area rugs explains this in detail.
Area Rugs: In-Plant Pet Urine Treatment
Rugs take the worst of pet accidents. They also respond best to the right treatment. That is why we bring them to our plant instead of cleaning them on your floor.
What Happens at Our Plant
Every rug gets a close inspection first. We check the fiber, the dyes, the backing, and how far the contamination spread. That tells us which solutions are safe for your rug.
Here is the general process for a rug with urine contamination:

- A deodorizing shampoo and a urine pre-treatment saturate the affected areas.
- The rug is scrubbed so those solutions reach deep into the pile.
- Clean water flushes the loosened residue out of the rug.
- Water is extracted, and the rug dries fully before it goes home.
Heavily contaminated rugs sometimes need a second round. We would rather repeat a step than send a rug back that still smells. You can read about a recent rug that still smelled after two earlier cleanings and how we finally cleared it.
Pickup and Delivery
We can pick up your rug and bring it back once it is clean. That means you never load a rug that smells of urine into your car. Most rugs return within about a week. Learn more about our in-plant area rug cleaning service.
Pet Odor in Carpet and Furniture

Wall-to-wall carpet and upholstered furniture stay in your home, so we treat them there. Our technicians pretreat the problem areas first. Then they clean with truck-mounted hot water extraction. The hoses run from the truck, so the loud equipment stays outside.
Carpet is not left soaked. It usually dries within a few hours. Sofas, sectionals, and chairs get the same careful approach through our upholstery cleaning service. For whole-house carpet care, see our residential carpet cleaning page.
When Pet Damage Goes Beyond Odor
Pets do more than have accidents. Chewed edges, pulled loops, and torn spots near doorways are common. Our carpet repair team can patch or rebuild those areas. In most homes, a repair costs far less than replacing the whole room.
What to Expect From Professional Treatment
Odor removal works best when we can reach the source. Most rugs, carpets, and furniture come back fresh. Some older stains may lighten without disappearing, because urine can change dye color over time. We will tell you what to expect after the inspection, before any work begins.
Fresh accidents are easier to treat than old ones. If a rug or carpet has absorbed months of accidents, call sooner rather than later. Every humid season gives that residue another chance to spread odor.

Our customers notice the difference. One homeowner called after her dog had an accident on the bedroom carpet. We came out the same day. “They got the stain out of the carpet and they got the smell out of the carpet,” she wrote. (Diane V.)
Another customer had a sofa treated for pet urine. Her verdict: “Looks like new and smells wonderful.” (Gloria K.)
